Shenzhen Airport Expands
A report on ShanghaiDaily.com says that 5,930,000,000 RMB is being invested in an expansion to Shenzhen Airport.
Let’s hope the extra money means some actual international flights for the so-called “international airport”.
Shenzhen Airport amplifying facilities
SHENZHEN Airport will expand its flying area and facilities, including a new runway, by investing 5.93 billion yuan (US$741.25 million) to meet the demand of growing air transport and ensure flight safety, Xinhua news agency reported today.
The new runway, which is 3.6 kilometers long and 60 meters wide, will be built to the west of the current runway. It will be capable of handling A380’s, the world’s largest airplane, Xinhua said.
By 2015, the airport will be able to manage 36 million passengers and 1.8 million tons of cargos a year. The new runway is designed to endure 300,000 takeoffs and landings a year.
The major construction projects require a total investment of 5.6 billion yuan, while 104 million yuan will be spent on an oil supply system. A new flight control system will cost about 220 million yuan, Xinhua stated.
The Shenzhen government will invest 4.26 billion yuan into the airport expansion, while the Shenzhen Airport (Group) Co will borrow 1.34 billion yuan from a bank.
The airport, which opened to the public in October 1991, can handle 15 million people and 700,000 tons of cargos a year. Its current runway is 3.4 kilometers long and 45 meters wide.
