to secure loans which were never paid back

- Two factories banned from export due to Mattel recall.

- Shandong government official gets death penalty for killing girlfriend
with car bomb; due to appeal saying it was just meant to cause a minor
accident, so it’s the bomb-maker’s fault

- Hebei bank staff steal 45 million RMB and spend it all on lottery tickets

- China’s trade surplus up 83% compared to last year; Food prices up 11.3%
compared to last year

- Drug manufacturer bribes regulator for licence, kills 13 with deadly

- Huanggang / Lok Ma Chau metro/rail border crossing set to open “in the
middle of the month” (maybe) having been scheduled for opening six weeks
ago. (And Huanggang metro stop on line 4 opened over a year after the other
stations on the line. And line 4 still only has two trains.)
- 10 year-old boy kidnapped, tortured. Kidnappers demanded 250,000 RMB
ransom, bargained down to 35,000, and the boy was released after 33 hours.
- Factories producing Olympics souvenirs fined for forcing employees to work
40-53 hours a week *extra*
- 40% of tea in the consumer market found to be substandard, with excessive
amounts of chlorine. 68 out of 80 batches sampled lacked the correct
labelling.
- 60 year old woman arrested for smuggling protected tree bark by boat into
Baoan.

China:


- Officials faked a letter from the Finland Dept of Justice to get a free
trip to Europe
- Mining company stored dynamite and other explosives in the basement of a
karaoke in Liaoning. It exploded killing 25 people.

-370 illegal foreign workers sent home; beware hiring Filipino domestic
helpers. 22 residence permits issues in Shenzhen since 2004. The status of
the other 30,000+ foreigners in SZ completely unclear… (official number of
foreigners in SZ over 1 year is 14,000)

- Man commits suicide by jumping off building in Luohu, lands on and kills
mother and child.

- 8 rubbish collecters attack police in road rage case; 300 more members of
their group threaten to attack police station.

- Grade 90 gasoline runs out in SZ due to Sinopec error

- Group of 570 Hong Kong shopping tourists refuse to leave SZ in dispute
over demands by the tour guides for extra tips.

China:

- Beijing bans food stalls next to toilets
- Universities not allowed to expel students who get pregnant. However they
will still be “encouraged to suspend their studies”
- Offensive family planning bureau slogans banned: “Raise fewer babies, but
more pigs”; “Houses toppled, cows confiscated, if abortion demand rejected”.
Replaced with more tasteful slogans: “The mother earth is too tired to
sustain more children.”
